Although I was raised in Hong Kong, I had an aunt & uncle who lived in California. They would always send us American memorabilia for my brother & I to enjoy. How do you think I grew up knowing who New Kids on the Block were?!?! We also spent hours watching tapes of Alvin and the Chipmunks. And for me in particular, they sent me “Sweet Valley High” books.
Does anyone know what they are? Were they really popular in America? I thought I had hit the gold mine. I mean, here were books about two beautiful blonde, California twins, going to school, learning how to drive, meeting boys. It was oh so dreamy for a short chubby Asian girl who didn’t get her license until she was 19. I read those books over and over again.
Why am I bringing this up? Because out of all the SVH books I read, I remember one specific thing. Jessica (one of the twins) had popcorn and orange juice one morning. For breakfast. WHOA. I grew up having Chinese sticky rice or Ramen for breakfast. Sometimes buttered toast and sausage, but NEVER popcorn and orange juice! What a novel idea! All Californian blond girls must do this! I have to try it!
Well, I never did get to try it until I was in high school. And it was amazing. I felt so American. And every now and then, when I can’t quite figure out what to do for breakfast (aka I’d like to eat something, but I’m too lazy to cook), I’ll resort back to what Jessica did. Only this morning, we didn’t have any popcorn available, but I did have some potato chips! Same thing, right?
Happy Friday!
