I know. I’m still behind. My new hard drive system arrived late last week, but we spent the entire weekend in Fort Worth with my family. So yesterday was the first time we could actually set it up and start backing up files. Aaaaand they’re still backing up (and even as I type this, Aaron notifies me that one of the brand new hard drives that just arrived is corrupted, oy). So all my yet-to-be-edited weddings have to stay unedited for a little while longer. :(

My laptop, however, is a different story. I’ve been able to do a little bit of work on it, including my sister-in-law’s baby shower (which took place 2 weeks ago in Palmer). I’ve never been so grateful to have 2 computers. Both equipped with editing software. I’m going to see if I can milk the system a bit and maybe pull some work off my desktop to do on my laptop.

Anyhoo, here are some pictures from TJ’s baby shower. It was a little surreal to think that all these gifts are for my yet unborn niece. I can’t wait to meet her!

Oh crap. My heart just melted.

This quilt belonged to TJ when she was a baby.

Okay, whoever came up with this is a freaking genius.

TJ and her bouquet. AKA her third boob.

This was for my brother, who is an avid soccer fan.

Happy Wednesday!

RIP Hard Drive

2010

Well, my hard drive bit the dust late last weekend. It was NOT a good weekend for me. I’m so very grateful that Aaron was genius enough to buy me a system that mirrors – if it wasn’t for that, I would have lost EVERYTHING. But I’m still bummed. Now, I’m waiting for my new system to come in, so my editing has come to a bit of a halt. If you are waiting on your pictures, I apologize. At least it came towards the end of wedding season for me instead of smack dab in the middle of it. I should be up and running next week.

Sooooo … in an effort not to bum anyone out (because I’m sure you’re taking this news just as hard as I am), I’m going to post a few interesting/random/weird/funny to me only things to lighten the mood.

1. Saw Inception last week. Loved it. Would go back and see it again. And if you know me, you know I HATE the movie theater. The only other movie I willingly saw twice in the theater was Ocean’s 13. And it wasn’t for the popcorn … ifyouknowwhatimean. Was it for George? Matt? Brad? No, baby … all 3.

2. Aaron & I just watched the series premiere of The Colony on the Discovery Channel. Some of you may find it very interesting, but it’s pretty brutal for me to watch. This ain’t no wimpy Survivor with TV drama. 7 strangers dumped in a 4-block area in abandoned, devastated Louisiana. The premise? They just survived a global epidemic, and they have to work together to survive against the elements and other survivors who want to steal their food and supplies. No cash prize. No limits or boundaries. Just cameramen and medical personnel in case they are in real danger. And apparently, getting pepper sprayed in the eyes does not constitute real danger. It’s very interesting if you are into human survival and instinct since they concocted this show after Hurricane Katrina. And it’s peppered with commentary from survival and disaster experts. Let’s just say I’m glad there are no cute animals on that show. They would not last very long. Crap, that just bummed me out. Okay, something fun, something fun …

3. What does it take to become a test chef for the Food Network? If you know the answer, call me. How much freaking fun would that be?! You get to cook all day long using other people’s recipes and critique them! Aaron likened it to being asked to test The Edge’s guitars and amps … AND provide feedback. Not too shabby!

4. I am now 20 weeks. Halfway there. Yep, that’s about it. I’ll bet you wish there was more to report on, but there really isn’t. Just getting bigger.

5. Anybody else sick of Lindsay Lohan? Yeah, me too. This is why the rest of the world makes fun of us. Sweetheart, I know your life is over, and you’ve compared your well-deserved jail sentence to the possible stoning of an innocent Iranian woman (WTF?!?!?!). But guess what, this emotional roller coaster you’re on is a repeat from Paris Hilton. That’s right, all that fake crying has been done before. So suck it up, go to rehab and be a responsible citizen. #spoiledpeopleshouldbeonthecolony

6. Yay for hashtags! I love them!!!!

Happy Thursday!

1. Why don’t you use a flash?
I can’t tell you how many people ask me that while I’m shooting. I suppose it’s a bit of a mystery, one that I am always happy to explain. There’s really 2 reasons why I don’t use flash.

The first reason is the honest-to-goodness truth: I love natural light so much better. It’s warm, it’s glowy, and it makes everyone look gorgeous. It evens out your skin tone, gives you a great tan, and it’s free! I’ve found that since weddings evoke love and romance, warm and glowy light is the best way to encompass those emotions. That’s not to say that there aren’t fantastic wedding photographers out there who use off-camera lighting, and I’ve learned so much by studying their images, but ultimately, it’s just not my style. The pictures that speak out to me the most are naturally lit.

The second reason is because I haven’t fully mastered the art of off-camera lighting. It’s an art form? ABSOLUTELY. You can evoke so many emotions and feelings with lighting – you just have to know how to do it well, do it correctly, and it takes endless tries. And infinite patience. And a nice chunk of money. And let’s just face it, in most cases, using a flash is quite distracting and disturbing. So until then, I will always resort to using available light whenever possible.

2. How can you shoot pictures in a dark room without flash?
Because I have a very expensive camera, and I’ve learned how to shoot in Manual Mode – which means that I can manually adjust my settings to make my camera do what I want. :) The higher caliber SLRs can handle low-light situations well, and so can the more expensive lenses. If you’re struggling with shooting in a dark environment, I would consider re-evaluating your equipment choices.

3. When will you resort to flash?
During a wedding reception. Because 99% of them are at night in a poorly-lit room.
People don’t need that much light to eat and dance, so it’s up to me to provide what I need. I’ll use a flash on my camera, and setup a stand at the back of the dance floor – usually next to the DJ. The flash on my camera illuminates my subject(s), and the light in the back gives some nice rim lighting for artistic effect. If there are videographers there, sometimes they’ll provide extra lighting that I can use as well. Receptions and perhaps formal shots are the only times I’ll bust out my lighting kit. Or whenever Aaron feels like tagging along with me on a shoot. Because let’s just face it, he’s my equipment carrier. A really hot equipment carrier. :)

Regardless of how I feel, I have shot some pictures with artificial lighting.

Eh. They look nice. They’re sharp. They’re not bad. So I can do it if needed, but it’s most definitely not my favorite thing to do. This is so incredibly important to know if you’re a photographer – you have to know your strengths and your weaknesses. And while you must always work on your weaknesses, people need to hire you for your strengths. That will make for a very happy client and happy photographer. :)
